Polypropylene and Sustainability

What is Polypropylene?

As one of the world’s most popular plastics, polypropylene is a highly versatile material that can be changed slightly to achieve certain properties depending on the application. Think clear plastic container versus the plastic fibers used in your woven outdoor furniture. These additives are readily available and have been proven to be highly effective.

In addition to being lightweight and durable, polypropylene is one of the least energy-intensive polymers to make and recycle compared to the other polymers in the market.

Is Polypropylene Recyclable?

As a thermoplastic polymer, it is adaptable and used across many different industries and products. Polypropylene is recyclable and reusable, which reduces the impact to landfill, soil pollution, and ocean pollution.

By recycling polypropylene, you can conserve natural resources and energy. For every ton of plastic that is recycled; 5,700 kwh of energy is saved, 16 barrels of oil are not consumed, and 30 cubic yards of landfill space is eliminated.

Recycling efforts of polypropylene are typically easier than other plastics due to the ability to be recycled by both mechanical and chemical processes.

Polypropylene has the ability to be completely circular and meet the needs of a more sustainable future.

Our Sustainability Initiatives

Electric Locomotive

Pinnacle Polymers has 1 of 3 custom electric locomotives within the US. Typically, an electric train emits between 20% to 35% less carbon per passenger mile than a diesel train. This benefit will only improve as the electricity generation industry reduces its carbon levels.

Operation Clean Sweep

For more than 25 years the plastics industry has promoted Operation Clean Sweep (OCS), a campaign dedicated to helping every plastic resin handling operation achieve zero plastic resin loss.

Louisiana Environmental Leadership Program

The mission of the Louisiana Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) is to promote a cleaner and better environment for Louisiana through voluntary pollution prevention, waste reduction and/or other environmental stewardship efforts.

Keep an eye on this page to learn more about future projects, like:

  • Sourcing lower carbon energy for our production facility
  • Solar Panels to provide energy to our offices
  • Electric Vehicle charging stations
